Definition
ADAS uses cameras and edge AI to warn drivers of imminent risks in real time, forward-collision warnings, lane-departure warnings, and following-distance alerts. In commercial dashcams it runs on-device to alert the driver before an incident occurs.
On India’s mixed-traffic highways, ADAS warnings can prevent collisions caused by fatigue or distraction, reducing accidents, insurance claims, and vehicle downtime.
ADAS stands for Advanced Driver Assistance System. It is a set of road-facing warnings, generated on the vehicle in real time, that tell the driver about a hazard developing ahead before it becomes an incident.
In a passenger car sold with factory ADAS, the system may also act: braking, holding a lane, keeping distance. In a commercial fleet dashcam, ADAS almost always warns rather than acts, because a retrofitted camera has no authority over the brakes or the steering.
That distinction is the single most common misunderstanding. A fleet dashcam advertising ADAS is offering alerts, not autonomy.

On Indian roads, lane departure is the alert most often disabled first, because lane markings are inconsistent enough that it fires without cause on many routes.
A car with factory ADAS has sensors calibrated to that model at the point of manufacture, and can intervene. A fleet retrofit is a camera added later to a vehicle that was not designed around it, and can only warn.
Both are called ADAS, which is why a buyer comparing a passenger-car brochure against a fleet dashcam quote is comparing two different products. Neither is a defective version of the other; they solve different problems for different owners.
For commercial fleets the retrofit is usually the point: it works across a mixed estate of vehicle makes and ages, where a factory system covers only the models that shipped with it.
Not for retrofitting to commercial fleets. AIS-140 requires a VLTD and panic buttons; it does not require ADAS. Some vehicle categories are subject to separate safety rules at the point of manufacture, which is a different question from what a fleet must fit to vehicles it already owns.
Fleets adopt ADAS for accident and claim reduction rather than compliance. If a vendor cites a rule that requires it, ask which rule: the answer usually turns out to be AIS-140, which does not.
