Video telematics adds camera footage to conventional telematics, combining GPS and sensor data with AI-analysed video from dashcams (ADAS/DMS) to give context to events like harsh braking or collisions.
Video evidence turns an ambiguous data spike into a verifiable event, supporting insurance claims, exonerating drivers in false claims, and enabling targeted safety coaching.
Conventional telematics tells you a vehicle braked hard at 14:32 on the ring road. Video telematics shows you why: a cyclist emerged from the left, or the driver was looking at a phone. The data point is identical; the conclusion is opposite.
That difference is the whole product. Every fleet with GPS already has the event log, and almost none of it is actionable, because a harsh-braking spike with no context cannot distinguish a good driver avoiding a hazard from a bad one causing it.
A video telematics platform pairs each event with the clip that caused it, so the review is of what happened rather than of a number.
Three parts, and a system missing any one is something else wearing the name.
Cameras that record to an SD card and nothing else are not video telematics. They are evidence you can only retrieve after you already know something went wrong, which is the situation the category exists to fix.
Three uses account for most of the value fleets actually realise.
Claim defence. In a disputed collision the party without footage argues from memory. Insurers settle faster against evidence, and a false third-party claim collapses when the clip exists.
Targeted coaching. A driver scorecard built from acceleration data alone is contested, because the driver knows why they braked. A scorecard built from clips is not.
Exoneration. Fleets consistently report the unexpected benefit is not catching bad drivers but clearing good ones, which is also what makes drivers stop resenting the camera.

A complete system uses both: ADAS facing the road for hazards ahead, DMS facing the driver for fatigue and distraction. Either alone gives half the picture, and the platform that links clips to events is the third and most often missing part.
