What is CAN bus telematics and when does a truck need it?
CAN bus is the network a vehicle uses internally to pass data between its own control units. Reading it gives fuel consumption, engine load, RPM, coolant temperature and fault codes at far better fidelity than a GPS-only tracker. It matters when you want to manage engine health and driving style rather than only position, and it needs a vehicle that exposes the bus and a device wired to it.
What is the OBD-II port and where is it on a commercial vehicle?
OBD-II is a standardised 16-pin diagnostic connector, normally under the dashboard within reach of the driver’s seat. A plug-in tracker reads engine data from it in about a minute with no wiring. The trade-off is that it can be unplugged just as quickly, which is why regulated commercial vehicles use hard-wired certified devices instead.
Can a GPS tracker read engine fault codes?
An OBD or CAN-connected device can, a GPS-only device cannot. Diagnostic trouble codes are raised by the vehicle itself and read over the diagnostic port, so the tracker has to be connected to that port rather than simply fitted to the vehicle.
