The four ways a VLTD fails
In practice, compliance failures are rarely a missing device.
Each of these passes a visual inspection and fails the backend check. The defence is monitoring transmission continuously, not checking at renewal, because a device dark for two months is a failure that already happened.
- The device is not on the state approved vendor list, so a correctly fitted unit does not count.
- It stopped transmitting after a battery disconnection, workshop visit or SIM lapse. Nothing on the dashboard changes, so nobody notices.
- It was registered against the wrong registration number at fitment.
- The SIM data plan lapsed, which halts backend transmission while the unit still powers on normally.
