The diagnostic port is a standard interface into the vehicle's own computers, and what it returns is broader than most operators expect.

Live parameters while the engine runs: engine speed, coolant temperature, load, throttle position, intake values, and on many vehicles fuel level and vehicle speed from the vehicle's own sensors rather than from GPS.

Stored fault codes, which is the part that matters for maintenance. When a control unit detects something out of range it records a code and, on many faults, freeze-frame data capturing the conditions at that moment.

The distinction worth holding on to: live parameters tell you how the engine is behaving now, fault codes tell you what it has already decided is wrong.

A DTC is a symptom, not a diagnosis, and treating it as a diagnosis is how workshops replace expensive parts that were working.

A code indicating a sensor reading out of range can mean the sensor has failed, or that the sensor is fine and reporting a real problem elsewhere, or that a connector is corroded. The code narrows the search; it does not end it.

Severity also varies enormously and the code alone does not convey it. Some indicate a vehicle that should stop now. Many indicate something to look at during the next service. A system that treats them alike produces alerts nobody reads.

What makes them operationally useful is the pattern rather than the instance: the same code recurring on one vehicle, or across vehicles of one model in one climate. See what is a DTC fault code.

The term promises more than the data supports, and it is worth being precise about what is genuinely achievable.

What works: catching a fault code the day it appears rather than at the next service, spotting a coolant temperature trending upward over weeks, noticing that one vehicle throws the same code after every long climb, and scheduling on actual running hours and load rather than on a calendar.

What does not: predicting a specific component failure on a specific date. Nothing in the OBD data supports that, and a vendor promising it is selling a model that has not met an Indian fleet.

The realistic gain is converting unplanned roadside failures into planned workshop visits. That is a large gain, because the cost of a breakdown is rarely the part.

Plenty, and knowing the boundary prevents buying it for the wrong reason.

• Mechanical wear with no sensor on it: brake pad thickness, suspension condition, tyre wear, clutch life.
• Anything on a trailer, which has no diagnostic bus of its own.
• Body and structural damage.
• Driver behaviour beyond what engine parameters imply. Harsh braking and cornering come from an accelerometer, not from the OBD port.

Support is not uniform across an Indian mixed fleet, and this is the first thing to check rather than the last.

Newer commercial vehicles generally expose a standard diagnostic interface. Older ones may expose a manufacturer-specific one, or very little. The set of parameters available also differs by make and model, so two trucks in the same yard can return different data from an identical device.

Practical approach: pilot on one vehicle of each make and model in the fleet and record what each actually returns, before ordering devices for all of them. A device that reports engine speed and nothing else on half your fleet is a different purchase than the one you thought you were making.

Data changes nothing until it changes what the workshop does on Monday.

The pattern that works: codes are triaged into stop now, book this week, and watch. Recurring codes on one vehicle escalate automatically rather than being cleared each time. Service intervals move from calendar to running hours and load. And the workshop sees the freeze-frame conditions, not just the code.

The failure pattern is equally consistent: every code raised as an alert, nobody triaging, and within a month the alerts are filtered into a folder nobody opens. A short list acted on beats a long list ignored.
