The four types

Magnetic trackers run on internal batteries and attach anywhere metal. No installation, no wiring, and a battery life measured in weeks. Genuinely portable.
Wireless is a marketing term rather than a category. It normally means battery-powered, which is a magnetic tracker described more attractively. Ask how it is powered rather than accepting the label.
Which to choose for what
The right answer depends on what you are protecting against.
- Commercial fleet: wired, and specifically an AIS-140 certified VLTD, because compliance requires it and nothing else counts.
- Private car, anti-theft: wired and hidden. A tracker a thief can find in ten seconds is not anti-theft.
- Private car, convenience: OBD. Easy, movable between vehicles, and gives diagnostics.
- Two-wheeler: wired, concealed, since bikes are stolen more often than cars and there is nowhere obvious to hide a battery unit.
- Temporary or covert use: magnetic, accepting that the battery will need recovering and recharging.
The OBD trade-off
OBD trackers are the most convenient option and the least secure, and both facts follow from the same design.
The port is standardised and in a known location, usually under the dashboard near the steering column. Anyone who knows that can unplug the device in seconds. For fleet use where drivers might prefer not to be tracked, that is a real weakness.
They also occupy the diagnostic port, which matters if a workshop needs it, and on some vehicles a poorly made unit can cause electrical faults or prevent the vehicle sleeping properly, draining the battery.
What they do well is diagnostics. Reading engine fault codes, fuel data and battery health from the same device that reports location is genuinely useful for maintenance planning.
Battery-powered trackers and their limits
Magnetic and battery trackers advertise long standby times, and those numbers assume infrequent reporting.
A tracker reporting once a day lasts weeks. The same tracker reporting every ten seconds lasts days. The advertised figure is the former; the useful configuration is closer to the latter.
They also cannot be relied on for anything continuous. A vehicle that must be visible at all times needs power from the vehicle, not from a cell that will eventually run out at a moment nobody chose.
Only one type satisfies AIS-140
This is where the choice stops being about preference.
For permit-holding commercial vehicles, the tracker must be an AIS-140 certified VLTD, type-approved and on the state approved list, transmitting to the state backend with emergency buttons fitted.
No OBD tracker, magnetic tracker or generic wired unit satisfies that, however accurate it is. Fitting one to a commercial vehicle means spending money and remaining non-compliant.
