Predictive maintenance uses live vehicle data, engine parameters, fault codes, and usage patterns, to service vehicles based on their actual condition and predicted failures, rather than on fixed calendar intervals.
Predicting failures before they happen reduces roadside breakdowns, extends vehicle life, and cuts emergency repair costs and lost trips.
Most Indian fleets sit between reactive and preventive. Moving to predictive is usually less about algorithms than about having condition data at all.
Predictive maintenance is not a single technique. It is a set of signals, each of which fails in a characteristic way before it fails completely.
The direct saving from catching a fault early is the difference between a workshop repair and a roadside failure. That is real, but it is the smaller half.
The larger half is the trip. A breakdown mid-route means a loaded vehicle immobilised, a delivery missed, a customer commitment broken, possible detention charges, a recovery vehicle dispatched, and a driver stranded, sometimes overnight, sometimes on a highway shoulder where the cargo itself is at risk.
On long-haul routes the recovery logistics alone routinely exceed the repair. This is why predictive maintenance economics look different for a fleet running 400 kilometre highway rotations than for one running city distribution: the further from base a failure occurs, the more the prediction is worth.
Preventive maintenance services on a fixed schedule by kilometres or calendar, treating every vehicle as average. Predictive maintenance uses each vehicle’s own condition data, fault codes, parameter trends and duty cycle, to service based on its actual state and likely failures.
At minimum, diagnostic trouble codes and engine parameters read through OBD-II or CAN, plus engine hours and usage data. Adding driver behaviour and fuel efficiency trends improves it substantially, because both are leading indicators of mechanical wear.
It depends on what the vehicle exposes. Older trucks may offer little or no usable diagnostic port, which limits engine data. Usage, idling, fuel trend and driver behaviour signals are still available from a GPS device and remain useful on their own.
The saving is dominated by avoided breakdowns rather than cheaper repairs. A mid-route failure costs the repair plus the missed delivery, recovery, detention exposure and driver downtime, so the value rises with route length and distance from base.
