Can Parents Track a School Bus? How School Bus Tracking Apps Work
Parents ask two questions: can I see where the bus is, and can I see where my child is. Those are different questions with different answers, and the distinction matters legally as well as practically.

What a school bus tracking app actually shows
Nearly all school bus tracking shows the vehicle, not the child.
The bus carries a GPS device. The app shows where that bus is, which stop it is approaching, and an estimated arrival time. If your child is on the bus, the bus location is a reasonable proxy for the child's location, and if your child is not on the bus, the app will not know.
Some systems add boarding confirmation through an RFID card or a similar scan at the door, which tells the school and the parent that a specific child boarded a specific bus. That is a different capability from tracking a child continuously, and it is the responsible way to answer the second question.
What it cannot do
Being clear about the limits prevents false reassurance, which is worse than no information.
- It does not track your child. It tracks a vehicle, plus optionally a boarding event.
- It cannot confirm your child got off at the right stop unless the system includes alighting confirmation.
- Estimated arrival times are estimates. Traffic, weather and a single delayed pickup earlier on the route move them.
- If the device loses network coverage, the app shows the last known position rather than a live one, which can look like a stopped bus.
Why free school bus tracking apps are rare
Parents search for free tracking apps and find little, because the cost is not in the app.
The cost is the certified device in each bus, the SIM data plan that keeps it transmitting, and the platform that turns raw positions into stop-level arrival estimates. An app on its own tracks nothing.
Where a school offers parent tracking, the school is paying for the underlying system. Where no school system exists, no free app can substitute for it, because there is no device to read.
The consent rules when children are tracked
This is the part most tracking vendors do not discuss, and it is the part a school's counsel will ask about.
Under section 9 of the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, processing a child's personal data requires verifiable consent of a parent or lawful guardian. The Act also prohibits tracking and behavioural monitoring of children, and advertising directed at them.
Safety-purpose transport tracking operated by a school with parental consent is a different thing from behavioural monitoring, but the consent has to be obtained and the purpose limited. In practice this means:
A school being asked to adopt tracking is entitled to ask the vendor how each of these is handled, and a vendor without an answer is a risk rather than a supplier.
- The school, not the technology vendor, is the Data Fiduciary for its students.
- Verifiable parental consent should be obtained before a child is associated with a bus, route or stop.
- Access should be restricted to authorised staff and to that child's own parent or guardian, not to other parents.
- Retention should be limited. There is no safety reason to keep a term of stop-level location history for a named child.
What parents should ask the school
If your school offers bus tracking, these are worth asking.
The last question matters most. Tracking tells you where a bus is; it does not supervise a child, and no app substitutes for the adult on the vehicle.
- Does the app show the bus, or does it also confirm boarding and alighting?
- Who else can see my child's stop and travel information?
- How long is that information kept?
- What happens if the bus device loses signal, and how will I know that is what I am seeing?
- Is there an attendant on the bus, and what is the procedure if a child is not at the stop?
