Dashcam Installation in India (2026): Wiring, Placement and Cost
A dashcam is only as good as its installation. A badly mounted camera obstructs your view, which is an offence, and a badly wired one stops recording without telling you.
This covers placement, the three wiring options, and what a professional fit should cost.
Where to mount it
Placement is the one part with legal consequence, because obstruction of the driver's view falls under the general safety provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act.
- Mount behind the rear-view mirror, high on the windscreen. This keeps the camera out of the swept view while giving it a clear forward angle.
- Keep it within the area cleared by the wipers, otherwise rain renders the footage useless.
- Do not mount centrally at eye level, and do not obstruct any airbag deployment path, particularly on the passenger side.
- Clean the glass with alcohol before fitting an adhesive mount. Most mount failures are surface preparation failures, and a camera that falls in July was fitted badly in March.
The three wiring options
How you power the camera determines what it can do.
Cigarette lighter socket. Simplest, no tools, camera runs only when the ignition is on. No parking mode. The cable is visible unless tucked, and the socket is occupied.
Hardwiring to the fuse box. The camera draws from an accessory fuse with a proper earth, the cable is hidden, and the socket stays free. This is the standard fit for anyone keeping the camera long term.
Hardwiring with voltage cut-off. Same as above plus a constant-power line so the camera runs while parked, with a cut-off that stops it drawing power below a set battery voltage. This is the only way parking mode works without risking a flat battery.
Routing the cable properly
A visible cable dangling across the windscreen is both untidy and a genuine obstruction risk.
On most cars the trim unclips by hand. If the A-pillar contains an airbag and you are unsure, this is the point to use a professional rather than improvise.
- Tuck the cable into the headliner above the windscreen.
- Bring it down inside the A-pillar trim, not across it.
- Keep clear of the airbag in the A-pillar. This matters: a cable routed through an airbag path becomes a projectile in a deployment.
- Run it under the dashboard edge to the fuse box or socket.
What installation costs
Cigarette lighter fitting is free and takes two minutes.
Professional hardwiring is a modest workshop charge, typically an hour of labour plus the hardwire kit. The kit is inexpensive and specific to the camera, so buy the manufacturer's own where possible.
For a fleet, per-vehicle installation cost matters more than it looks. Fifteen vehicles at an hour each is a meaningful spend, and it is worth doing once properly rather than twice, because a badly fitted camera that fails at month four costs the labour again plus whatever the missing footage was worth.
After installation, verify it works
This step gets skipped and it is the one that matters.
Then check again after a month. Silent failure is the normal dashcam failure mode, and the only defence is looking.
- Record a short drive and play it back on a computer, not the camera's own screen.
- Check you can read a number plate at typical following distance, in daylight and at night.
- Confirm the timestamp is set correctly. A camera whose clock is wrong invites an argument about when footage was recorded.
- Confirm loop recording is overwriting correctly and the G-sensor locks a file when triggered.
Frequently asked questions
Where should a dashcam be mounted in India?
Behind the rear-view mirror, high on the windscreen and within the wiper-swept area. It must not obstruct the driver's view, since obstruction falls under the general safety provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, and it must not block an airbag deployment path.
Should I hardwire my dashcam or use the cigarette lighter?
The cigarette lighter is simplest but the camera only runs with the ignition on and there is no parking mode. Hardwiring to the fuse box hides the cable and frees the socket; hardwiring with a voltage cut-off additionally allows parking surveillance without flattening the battery.
How much does dashcam installation cost in India?
Cigarette lighter fitting is free. Professional hardwiring is typically about an hour of workshop labour plus the cost of a camera-specific hardwire kit.
Can I install a dashcam myself?
Cigarette lighter fitting, yes. Hardwiring is manageable if you are comfortable with fuse boxes and trim removal, but if the A-pillar contains an airbag and you are unsure about routing the cable clear of it, use a professional.
How do I know my dashcam is still recording?
Play footage back on a computer rather than the camera screen, confirm you can read a number plate at following distance in daylight and at night, and check the timestamp is correct. Repeat monthly, because silent failure is the normal dashcam failure mode.
