Dashcam Features Explained (2026): What the Spec Sheet Means
Dashcam spec sheets lead with the numbers cheapest to improve. Resolution is prominent; sensor quality, which determines whether footage is actually usable, rarely appears.

Resolution: 1080p, 2K and 4K
Resolution is how many pixels the camera records. It is not how much detail you can see.
A good sensor at 1080p produces more usable footage than a poor sensor at 4K, because detail is limited by optics and light gathering before it is limited by pixel count. Manufacturers lead with resolution because raising it is cheap.
4K has a genuine benefit: it lets you crop into a frame and still read a plate. That matters where the incident happened at the edge of the field of view. But 4K on a weak sensor at night is worse than 1080p on a good one.
WDR and HDR
Wide Dynamic Range and High Dynamic Range address the problem that actually ruins dashcam footage in India: extreme contrast.
Driving out of a dark underpass into bright sun, the camera has to expose for both at once. Without WDR or HDR you get a blown-out white rectangle or a black one, and either way the plate is unreadable.
This matters more than resolution for practical Indian driving conditions, and it is far less prominently advertised.
Parking mode
Parking mode records while the vehicle is off. There are three implementations and they are not equivalent.
All three need constant power, which means hardwiring with a voltage cut-off. Parking mode on internal battery alone lasts minutes.
- Motion detection: the camera wakes when something moves. Misses slow approaches and drains power on busy streets.
- Impact detection: the camera wakes on a G-sensor trigger. Lower power draw but records only after contact, so you may miss who caused it.
- Time-lapse: continuous low-frame-rate recording. Most reliable and most power hungry.
G-sensor and loop recording
These two work together and misunderstanding them is how footage gets lost.
Loop recording continuously overwrites the oldest footage so the card never fills. That is convenient and it means your evidence has an expiry date measured in hours on a small card.
The G-sensor detects sudden deceleration and locks the current file so loop recording cannot overwrite it. It is the mechanism that saves your footage automatically.
G-sensor sensitivity is worth setting deliberately. Too sensitive and Indian road surfaces lock files constantly until the card fills with protected clips; too insensitive and a genuine impact is not captured.
Supercapacitor versus lithium battery
This is the specification that most affects how long the camera lasts in India, and it is rarely on the front of the box.
Lithium batteries degrade in heat and can swell. A windscreen in an Indian summer reaches temperatures that shorten battery life dramatically, and a swollen battery is a safety issue as well as a dead camera.
Supercapacitors tolerate heat far better. They store less energy, which is why capacitor cameras need hardwiring for parking mode, but they survive conditions that kill battery units.
For any vehicle parked outdoors in India, prefer a supercapacitor.
Which features actually matter
