An AI dashcam for a fleet is a dual-lens camera that judges what it sees rather than only recording it. They catch different failures. ADAS catches the consequence of inattention; DMS catches the inattention itself, typically some seconds earlier. On Indian long-haul routes, where night driving and fatigue dominate the incident profile, DMS is often the higher-value half, and it is the half most commonly missing from a cheap "AI dashcam".

Why edge processing matters more in India than the spec sheet suggests
There are two places the AI can run, and the choice decides whether the system prevents anything.
- On the device (edge). Inference runs on a chip in the camera. The alert fires in well under a second, independent of signal.
- In the cloud. Video uploads, a server decides, a result comes back. On a good connection this adds seconds. On a highway stretch with weak 4G it adds minutes, or never arrives.

Where AIS-140 fits, and where it does not

AIS-140 governs the tracking device, the VLTD, with its panic button and its link to the state backend. It is a legal requirement for permit-holding commercial vehicles and it is checked at RTO fitness and permit time.
An AI dashcam is a safety system, not a compliance device. Fitting one does not make a vehicle AIS-140 compliant, and being AIS-140 compliant does not give a fleet any camera coverage. A fleet running regulated vehicles needs both, and they are separate purchases even when one vendor quotes them together.
Any supplier who implies a dashcam satisfies AIS-140 is either confused or hoping you are.
What to check before buying, in order
- Does it do both ADAS and DMS, or is one of them absent behind the phrase "AI-powered"?
- Where does inference run? Edge or cloud. Test it offline rather than accepting the answer.
- What triggers a real-time intervention? An alert nobody hears until the next day is a recording, not prevention.
- How is footage retrieved? Pulling a memory card from a truck that is 900 kilometres away is not a retrieval process.
- Is it rated for the conditions? Continuous duty in cab temperatures that reach well past 50C in summer, plus dust and monsoon water ingress.
- Does it integrate with your tracking, or is it a second portal that nobody logs into?
- What happens to the driver data? Cab-facing video of an identified person is personal data under the DPDP Act. Retention, access and notice should be settled before installation, not after a dispute.
Getting drivers to accept a cab-facing camera
This decides whether the investment survives, and it is where most deployments quietly fail. A camera that gets covered with a cloth in week three produces nothing.
What works is narrow and unglamorous. Say plainly what is recorded and what is not. Use the footage to coach rather than to dock pay, and then actually do that, because drivers find out quickly which one it is. Coach soon after the event, with the ten-second clip, not with a monthly score. And exonerate: the first time cab video clears one of your drivers in a disputed accident, acceptance changes more than any policy document will.
