How to Check Vehicle Insurance, PUC and Fitness by Number (2026)

5 min readUpdated 2026-07

Insurance, PUC and fitness are the three compliance documents most often checked at the roadside and most often let expire. You can verify all three online using the registration number.

This guide shows where to check each one and why fleets automate these checks in bulk.

On this page

  • Check insurance by registration number
  • Check the PUC certificate
  • Check fitness (mainly commercial vehicles)
  • Why fleets automate this

Check insurance by registration number

Basic insurance validity is shown in the Vahan vehicle details lookup and in the mParivahan app.

For the policy itself, the Insurance Information Bureau portal lets you look up the insurer and policy status by registration number.

Check the PUC certificate

Go to the Parivahan PUC service, enter the registration number, and view the pollution certificate validity. If it has expired, a fresh PUC can be issued at any authorised centre.

Check fitness (mainly commercial vehicles)

Commercial vehicles must hold a valid fitness certificate. The fitness expiry is shown in the Vahan details for the vehicle.

Private vehicles are deemed fit for the first 15 years and only need a fitness test at renewal after that.

Why fleets automate this

Checking insurance, PUC and fitness one vehicle at a time does not scale. A grounded vehicle from a lapsed document is lost revenue and a compliance risk.

MoboSafe verifies these documents across an entire fleet through the Vahan integration and flags every expiry before it becomes a problem.
